Isis Metals is your go-to supplier for top-notch tool steels in Manila, Philippines, proudly offering robust and adaptable **W1 Tool and Die Steel Bars** tailored for all your general-purpose tooling and fabrication needs. W1 is a water-hardening carbon tool steel celebrated for its remarkable hardness and edge retention. Perfect for cold work and straightforward tooling tasks, W1 delivers excellent performance at a budget-friendly price for machinists, toolmakers, and fabricators alike. With a variety of sizes and conditions in stock, Isis Metals ensures quick delivery. Committed to quality, value, and service, they cater to the demands of local and regional industries with dependable steel solutions.
Tool and die steel W1 bars are typically around 0.90-1.05% carbon (C), 0.30-0.50% manganese (Mn), 0.30% silicon (Si), with trace phosphorus (P), sulphur (S), and chromium (Cr). The presence of a higher amount of carbon provides hardness and resistance to wear, whereas manganese is added to induce strength and toughness. The mechanical properties of W1 steel include a tensile strength that is around 900-1000 MPa, hardness varying between 55-62 HRC after undergoing heat treatment, and an exceptional resistance to wear. In addition, the tooling can exhibit good machinability and is readily hardened using relatively simple quenching and tempering procedures, thus allowing the material for usage in tooling applications.

Tool and Die Steel W1 bars are recyclable, reducing environmental impact. However, their production involves energy-intensive processes. Sustainable practices can enhance their eco-friendliness, such as using recycled materials and cleaner manufacturing methods.
Tool and Die Steel W1 bars are not highly resistant to corrosion, as they are high-carbon steels. They can rust when exposed to moisture, requiring proper maintenance, such as coating or regular oiling, to prevent corrosion.
Tool and Die Steel W1 bars are not ideal for structural applications due to their high carbon content, which makes them brittle and less ductile. They are better suited for tools, dies, and cutting applications where hardness and wear resistance are crucial. For structural applications, steels with better toughness and strength, like carbon or alloy steels, are preferred.
W1 Tool Steel is a high-carbon steel that contains around 0.90% to 1.00% carbon, along with trace amounts of manganese and silicon. After water quenching, it achieves impressive hardness (up to 66 HRC), making it perfect for tools that need sharp edges and wear resistance. Its tensile strength can surpass 850 MPa (123,000 psi) depending on the heat treatment applied. However, W1 does have lower toughness compared to alloyed tool steels, so it’s best suited for applications where shock resistance isn’t a major concern. It machines easily in its annealed state and can be hardened quickly, resulting in sharp, durable edges.
