High-Speed Steel M42 Bars contain about 1.05% Carbon, 4.0% Molybdenum, 8.0% Cobalt, 2.0% Vanadium, and 1.0% Tungsten, together with small additions of Chromium and Manganese. This mix provides outstanding hardness and wear resistance, which makes M42 the best suited for precision cutting tools. Mechanically, it has a Rockwell hardness range of 68–70 HRC, together with better toughness and superior thermal softening resistance. The alloy resists edge softening and retains edge stability even under very harsh conditions, making it provide long service life and consistent performance in high-stress high-speed machining and metalworking applications.
